Turkle and Gopnik

Connecting points for Turkle and Gopnik â€Å"What changed? That James story helps supply the key. It was trains and telegrams. The railroad ended isolation, and packed the metropolis with people whose work was defined by a complicated network of social obligations. â€Å" (Gopnik 157). | â€Å"She confined that she would trade in her boyfriend ‘for a sophisticated Japanese robot’ if the robot would produce what she called â€Å"caring environment†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ I would be happy to produce the illusion that there is somebody really with me†¦ A responsive robot even exhibited scripted behavior, seemed better to her than he demanding boyfriend† (Turkle 269). In both passages the authors discuss how technology can be very convenient for us. Gopnik discusses how trains and telegrams make it easier for people to get where they need to and communicate. However, trains brought over crowding to the cities and telegrams created a sense of separation because now peop le did not have to actually go and see each other. Turkle also talks about the convenience that comes with technology. When she was talking to a female that said that she would not mind a robot boyfriend because it would help her not to be lonely but unlike a real one it she would not have to tend to their demands. The real question, I saw was not â€Å"Why this friend? † but, â€Å"Why this fiction? † Why as Olivia had seen so clearly, are grownups in New York so busy, and so obsessed with the language of busyness that it dominants their conversation? †¦ grabbing lunch instead of sitting down and exchanging intimacies†( Gopnik 156). | â€Å"Do you care that the turtle is alive?†¦ A ten year old girl told me that she would prefer a robot turtle because aliveness comes with aesthetic inconvenience†¦ â€Å"For what the turtles do, you didn’t have to have live ones. †(Turkle 265-266) |Both authors have made assumptions for their essays based on youth’s point of view . Gopnik uses his daughter’s imaginary friend to show how things are in the busy life of a New York. Technology has made New Yorkers so busy that they rather â€Å"talk to the person later† instead of sitting down and having actual conversation. Turkle also uses children to explain her point. At the zoo with children she explains how they said that they rather see a mechanical turtle because actual interaction with a turtle is not needed if the fake one can do the same thing. Both of these are examples of how technology is now seen as equal to physical bonding. â€Å"Busyness is felt so intently here because we are both crowded and overloaded. We exit the apartment into a still dense nineteenth century grid of street corners and restaurants of people full of people, and come to a twentieth-century grid of faxes and emails and overwhelming incompleteness† (Gopnik 158) | â€Å"We build a following on Facebook or Myspace and wo nder to what degree our followers are friends†¦ But for most people it begins when one creates a profile on social- networking site or builds a persona or avatar for a game or virtual world. (Turkle 273). | Both authors in these quotes talk about how, how technology has begun today to follow you everywhere and becomes more important to you than anything else. And how we create online networks we become encompassed and like our emails they become our lives. We become overwhelmed because we feel like we must respond to them and we must check our twitter followers.

Burned by Ellen Hopkins Essay Example for Free

Burned by Ellen Hopkins Essay Ellen Hopkins wrote this novel about a girl who grew up in a Mormon household, and is beginning to think that this is not a lifestyle she wants for herself. With an abusive father, lazy and passive mother, and constant conflicts with the Mormon teachings and beliefs, she refuses to give in to that way of life. She refuses to ever become property to a husband who she is taught to â€Å"obey† or a baby producing machine. With her new resilience and want for a normal life, it angers her father. He sends her to live with his estranged sister for the summer, but what he doesn’t realize is that he’s giving her freedom and a chance to live. She learns to love and that life as she knew it was never a life meant for her. Hopkins’ book shows the life of a Mormon girl; Pattyn Scarlet Von Stratten. Pattyn is tired of the Mormon lifestyle and rebels against her family and the rules of her home and church. Her father spends most of the time drunk and angry and her mother has a whole household to take care of. After Pattyn gets in a fight and breaks a window, her family has had enough of her rebelling so they send her to live with her Aunt, out in the middle of nowhere, for the summer, so she can no longer get in trouble. It turns out that she has fun on her stay with her aunt, she learns how to drive and ride a horse, and meets the love of her life. She fell in love with Ethan, the son of her aunt’s friend. He is not Mormon and her father would kill the both of them if they were together. After returning home things start to go bad again. She mouths off to her father and gets beaten. She takes the rap for something her sister does, and gets beaten to save her sister. She also learns that she will have Ethan’s baby. Like all of Hopkins novels, Burned also has a tragic ending. Ethan and Pattyn get in a car wreck and she wakes up in the hospital to learn that she lost Ethan and her baby. In the end she says that God could not be love because love was a corpse, because she lost the love of her life, and the only thing remnant of him. Ethics College Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Ethics College - Essay Example They bind people to perform certain actions, or to avoid them, as the case may be. These obligations differ from person to person. They are also dependent upon the type of relationship, that is whether personal or professional. Nevertheless, a person is morally bound to fulfill the same. Secondly, ideals are a set of standards, on the basis of which a person performs actions. It varies on the basis of culture of a person. Moreover, there may be several ways of pursuing these goals or standards. The most common virtues or ideals found in all cultures include loyalty, compassion, tolerance, justice, peace etc. These virtues help us determine whether an act is morally justified. Further, organizational ethics include customer satisfaction, efficiency, superior quality, productivity, fair pricing etc. An action either honors these ideals or disregards them. Hence, these standards help us to determine the morality quotient of the action. Lastly, ethics are concerned with the consequences of our actions and their effect on other concerned people. While determining the likely procedure, one has to consider the outcome of the action. Thus, while evaluating various options available, one must identify the parties involved and carefully analyze the pros and cons involved. From the above, it can be concluded that any course of action which recognizes the obligations, keeping in mind the ideals and benefits all the people concerned, can be acknowledged as morally correct. An action which does not qualify either of the above three factors, cannot be regarded as morally sound, therefore it should be revised. However, one might be in jeopardy, because of conflicting ideals, obligations or effects. To simplify, the course of evaluation to determine the correct action, can be divided into two steps. (Shaw, W.H., Barry, V. and Sansbury, G. 2009) In the first step we ascertain the obligations involved and towards whom they are involved; the ideals which are recognized and those which are ignored. We also identify the people who are affected by our action and the extent of effect on them. The second step involves prioritizing, that is, we deduce which action will prove to be most appropriate out of the set of alternatives. While making a decision one should adopt a stronger objective of the two and the more important ideal which would result in "greater good and lesser harm". Part 2: In real life it is difficult to categorize ideals or objectives on the basis of the importance, so is balancing objectives ideals and effects. Hence the crux of the decision making criteria is left unanswered here. Some propagate that business ethics has unique principles to determine right and wrong on the basis of its business settings. They say that business ethics need not be in tandem with the ethics laid done by the society of right and wrong. (Warlick, Staten Leslie.1998). Some action may be considered as ethical from the point of view of business while it may be unethical from society's point of view. While marketing a company's product, people resort to lying or exaggerating the quality of the product or service in order to sell the product. Say a firm promoting a fairness cream may exaggerate that the effectiveness of the cream shows in a month of usage, while in

Returning to college Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Returning to college - Essay Example It is not going to be easy for me to prepare myself for the transition from a family person to a student. Though once I was a student, at that time, I never had any constraints for my studies. Well, I did not grow up with good study habits, I used to spend most of my free time playing video games, watching movies and listening to music and hardly doing my homework when I was a student. Since I got married now and have an infant daughter, my burdens have increased a lot. So the problem is how to prepare myself mentally for the transition from a house wife to a student without sacrificing the needs of my infant and husband. The very first step I am taking is to make sure that, my home is a good place to study. For any positive results to be attained in studying at home, the home environment should be made conducive for thinking. In order to make my home suitable for studies, I have to manage my daughter and husband judiciously. It is clear to me that, I can only concentrate on one thing at a time and for that purpose the home environment should be free from noise and distraction. The time management of my daughter is going to be a big issue in my pursuit of completing a college degree. She is in her early pre-teen period and hence it is compulsory for me to take care of her because of the presence of mother is essential for the child development at infancy period. So apart from my studies, I have to spend as much as time with her in order to satisfy her needs. It is difficult for me to convince her regarding the importance of my studies because of her small age. It is better for me to utilize more time for my studies while my daughter is sleeping. I can also ask my husband to take her to some parks or to entertain her in some ways when I am studying. The second challenge of course may arise from my husband. Like all other husbands, he also requires my company in order to maintain the

Discuss the pros and cons of private vs. public defense. Please Research Paper

Discuss the pros and cons of private vs. public defense. Please remember this is not an opinion question - Research Paper Example When charged for criminal or civil offences, people always have to choose the type of attorney to use because of the benefits they can accrue from them. This paper reports on the pros and cons of a public and private attorney. The first advantage that associated with public defenders is that they are professionals whose services are given to the public free of charge. Anyone entitled to the services of public attorney does not need to pay. Since they are paid by the county and state governments, the public do not need to spend even a single cent on them. Meaning, they are the cheapest attorneys whose services are guaranteed so long as one qualifies to be represented by them. However, this does not apply to the private defenders who are directly hired by the client who fully pays for their services in case they need to be represented in a court of law. In fact, this is a disadvantage of private defenders (Reyrauch, 2011). Unlike their counterparts, private attorneys only represent one in the court of law if they are properly paid by the same client. Meaning, if one does not have enough money, one might be forced to borrow, take a loan or forfeit the services of a private defender. The other advantage of a public defender is that their presence in a case might make the case to be presided over and finished within the shortest time possible. As public officers, public defenders often have a backlog of cases to represent. Therefore, in order to save on time, they have to liaise with the prosecutor and the bench to ensure that a case is heard and decided upon within a short time. This is the only way through which they can create room for other cases which are obviously awaiting them. Surprisingly, this does not apply to the private defenders who are keen on simultaneously handling a few cases and spending a lot of time in conducting private investigations and conducting all the other logistical. So, with

Board Governance and Volunteer Management in Nonprofits Term Paper

Board Governance and Volunteer Management in Nonprofits - Term Paper Example n should be run directly under the aegis of the board of governors who make all the decisions and decide what exactly the charter of the organization is going to be. They will understand the very basis of the management as well as the ways and means through which people are hired, jobs are assigned and tasks delegated to one another (Nelson 1997). The organizational plan also encompasses the relationships with similar nonprofit or for-profit organizations and how the two work along with one another to bring about a symbiotic association. The organizational plan for at-risk girls banks a great deal on the linkages of these organizations with each other, most of which deal specifically with the emphasis on at-risk schools and children (Barrett 1995). Also the manner in which the organization is going to operate on a regular basis, its functional costs, its pending issues and so on need to be taken care of at the highest level. These aspects are important as they mention each and every pointer in complete totality. The specific tools and strategies which the at-risk girls organization must make use of include the basis of its recruitment and selection, the manner in which new employees are hired, trained and then let off their jobs (removal from service). It also comprises of their orientation at the organization whilst being supervised by the employers themselves. The board members are chosen on a strict guideline where they are evaluated time and again as per their work basis. The non-governing volunteers and the employees who do pro bono work are also taken care of. Their selection is a very cumbersome process, but one that surely requires a stringent approach. These tools and strategies need to be drawn up in such a manner that there is complete accountability and clarity at all ranks, and no apprehensions are raised as such (Beeler 1994). At-risk girls organization is a nonprofit institution therefore it is necessary to find out how money will flow and how

Visual analysis paper - Essay Example These religious undertone of the painting was typical of many paintings during the period. It is important to note that the Renaissance period was the time when the strict rules of the visual arts were established. It is the time where academic painting was established where later painters would subscribe until today. During this period, arts flourished as well as science. As earlier mentioned, it was in this period where the strict rules of academic drawing and painting was established where artworks followed a strict method or rules. Unlike the impressionists who did a â€Å"freer† stroke of brush where details are not emphasized but rather the use of light to emphasize figures, renaissance paintings particularly Flemish paintings followed strict rules, probably the strictest, rigorous and laborious rules. In this method, the canvass (or any other medium such as wood) are not merely stained by paints but rather the colors are build. It typically begins with a drawing where the rule of analytic line is followed. Analytic lines are lines that considers geometrical patterns and proportions in relation to other parts of the subject. Then it is transferred to the canvass (or other medium) by several underpaintings. Generally, a brown layer washes the canvass and lays out the figure or subject then subsequent underpaintings are painted over it. Here, the values, light and shadows are emphasized that would later give depth to the color of the final work. The first layer is usually called â€Å"imprimatura† or the first layer where subsequent layers are glazed or painted over it to provide the final body of the painting. Depending on the preference of the artists, the final underpainting can either be in grisalle or verdaccio. Grisalle is a greenish gray which is usually used as an underpainting for flesh

Is Free Cash better than dividend per share (DPS) Assignment

Is Free Cash better than dividend per share (DPS) - Assignment Example This study examines between Earnings per Share and Free Cash to determine the best investment option. Dividend is a payment made by public corporations to the shareholders from the profits. Dividend per Share (DPS) refers to the sum or dividends of declared dividends for every ordinary share issued (Brigham & Daves, 2012). Dividends are a proportion of company’s profits reported by the business to the shareholders since shareholders are owners of the company and deserve a share of company’s profit. When a corporation decides to issue a dividend to the shareholders they allocate a fixed amount per share with shareholders getting a fraction of dividend proportionate to the shares, they hold (Brigham & Daves, 2012). Some corporations issue fixed sum of dividends to the shareholders and transfer the other undistributed profit amount is maintained as retained earnings. Investing in companies that issue shareholders with dividend gives the investors an opportunity to generate a steady return through income from the stock purchases (Ehrhardt & Brigham, 2010). However, the com pany should examine the pay-out ratio to ensure the earnings of the company are capable of supporting the current dividend payment amount. Investing in a corporation with the dividend per share implies the shareholders have the higher chance of increasing income, but the company has a problem with managing its operations due to inadequacy of cash (Ehrhardt & Brigham, 2010) Free cash flow refer to pay a firm has generated for its shareholders after deducting expenses investing in its growth. Petition to waive the university mathematics requirement Essay

Petition to waive the university mathematics requirement - Essay Example he intends and to finish taking up law in the soonest possible time to help his community without having lost anything on his part and on the part of the institution. The basic questions that he proposed to answer in the article are, â€Å"Why do I need college algebra (MAT-117)? Is college algebra necessary for studying American Indian law? Will I use college algebra in my chosen field? What will the University gain or lose, from my taking college algebra or not?† (Adams par.6). The answer in all these questions is no. College Algebra is not necessary in American Indian law and in the practice of law in general. This was affirmed by a practicing lawyer. â€Å"In this netherworld, algebra and justice exist independently of one another† (par. 13). He further affirms that â€Å"I assure this committee that despite not having a formal accreditation in algebra, I will prove to be nothing less than an asset to this University and its Indian community† (par.15). If he be allowed to graduate, he will be able to help out his own community and other Native Americans as he intends and his practical experiences in life has proven that he is competent in his chosen path with or without the required Algebra subjects. On the other hand, permitting him not to finish the math courses will prevent him from having a well-rounded college experience and will not place him in equal footing with all of the other students of the University. The ASU catalog contains that the basic math requirements are necessary â€Å"(1) for a minimum level of math competency in my chosen field, and (2) to satisfy the university math requirement in order to graduate† (par. 7). All other students are required to take the subjects and Adams is not the only one who is in his advanced age enrolled in the... There is a main action expected in the end of the essay. This would be alllowing Gordon Adams to forego taking the Algebra subjects, which would enable him to graduate as he intends and to finish taking up law in the soonest possible time to help his community without having lost anything on his part and on the part of the institution. Another available option arises in the essay. On the other hand, permitting him not to finish the math courses will prevent him from having a well-rounded college experience and will not place him in equal footing with all of the other students of the University. Another point that an essay focuses on is equality. All other students are required to take the subjects and Adams is not the only one who is in his advanced age enrolled in the university. Everyone must be in equal footing since they are all within the same institution. Letting him bypass university rules will give an unwarranted precedence wherein other students may think they could apply fo r the same privilege on lesser grounds. The goals of the university are enshrined in the courses that they have set for every student and in this case it includes completing basic math requirements. In the conclusion of the essay, we see that despite these arguments, Gordon Adams must be allowed to waive the two math subjects required by the university only because he has showed evidence that he is a competent student and that the skills that the subjects aim to hone are those which he already possesses.

Types of identity theft Pretexting Pretexting is considered to be one of the forms of Identity Theft; in this exercise one culprit impersonates the victim, such that one calls under the pretext being that person (Richard, 2003). The exercise is normally performed to secure personal information that includes telephone records, and details of bank accounts. According to studies it has been observed that in many of the cases the4 victims are unable to detect their identity theft through pretexting. Credit Card fraud The evolution of internet has made it easier for the interested customers to avail deals through internet. Credit card facilities launched by several banks have tried to facilitate the customers, and have provided them with an easy opportunity to avail deals through electronic transaction via credit card. Unfortunately the sharing of information has often been leaked, and many of the cases of identity theft have been reported. According to study, running up charges on anothers credit card, or passing checks of another, is a form of identity theft. Identity theft is this case is practiced through appropriation of the signature, account number, and other aspects of anothers identity, the purpose of the entire exercise is to secure financial benefits on other expenses through unethical and illegal practice. New account fraud Identity theft has been reported through malpractices related to the opening of new accounts. In such case, the criminal uses the identity of the victim, and then after fulfilling the formalities of credit card companies borrow the money. Criminal identity theft In some of the cases it has been reported that criminals impersonate innocent people after their arrest, and have managed to escape successfully. In such cases, the innocent individual then has criminal record, and in some of the cases arrest warrants have also been issued. It has been researched that it is easier for the criminal to link their personality with the victim, and later manage to escape, however in the police records many such individuals are blacklisted who have reported their ignorance about the incident, and have proved their presence in foreign country at the time of criminal activity. Identity Theft as Abuse In the survey which was conducted in 2004, it was observed that domestic abuse has direct relationship with Identity Theft; it was observed that more than 15 percent reported that they were also victims of domestic harassment and abuse from the perpetrator. Identity theft is also conducted by the strangers, and in some of the cases organized criminal networks are involved in such practices. The identity theft is solely conducted to achieve economic gains through false identity, there it is expected that an authority with financial stability is likely to be the victim, domestic violence is sometimes accompanied by economic abuse, such as controlling access to wealth or destruction of property (John, 2002). Much because it is difficult to trace the culprit involve in the identity theft, the practice is considered to be extremely lucrative for the abuser, where as the malpractice has long lasting and debilitating (Robert, 2003) impact on the status, repute and character of the victim. The survey revealed that, identity theft victims spend a median of one hundred hours rectifying the damage, and lose thousands of dollars in lost wages and other expenses (John, 2002), more than 50 percent of the victim have complained that they are subjected to repeated interrogations and false implications by the law agencies even after 2 years after the revelation of their identity theft, whereas as some reported that they are subjected to false implications for more than decade. According to the Stalking Resource Center at the National Center for the Victims of Crime, explained that stalking as a course of conduct directed at a specific person when one knows or should know that the course of conduct would cause a reasonable person to fear for his or her safety or the safety of a third person; or suffer other emotional distress (Kristin, 2004), therefore stalking can be considered as a derivative of the stalking. The discussed surveillance, pretexting, and credit identity theft are directly related to stalking. Pretexting is not considered as an offence of extreme tribulation for the victim, the pretexter can only secure the right to access the accounts, and telephone record. Therefore the expected threats and damages through pretexter include the cancellation of the victim’s account, electric, gas and credit car accounts. However the cases of identity theft related to credit cards have subjected the victim under serious consequences. The survey report found that, distress caused by credit identity theft is real, the victims report rage and anger; personal financial fears; fears for family financial safety; a sense of powerlessness and of feeling defiled (Kristin, 2004). Preventive Measures The measures to be necessarily adopted by the public to avoid any incident of victimization through identity theft include issuance of the credit report periodically. The public should also ensure that their credit limit is not too high, so that even in case of any manipulation the financial loss can be adjusted. The public should avail the scheme for the monitoring of their credit, through which unexpected financial dealings can be tracked. It has been learnt that Fair Credit Reporting Act has provided the public with an opportunity to place a fraud alert on their credit report, through such scheme the creditors have the right to access to verify their credit. Classroom Management Paper Essay Example for Free

Classroom Management Paper Essay During my classroom observation, I observed the classroom of Mrs. Shanesta Pettway. Mrs. Pettway is a 9th grade history teacher at Jeff Davis High School. She runs a very structured class with a well plan classroom management plan. Mrs. Pettway follows a strict schedule during the 50 minutes of class time that students follow such as 15 minute bell ringer at the beginning of class, 15 minutes of lecture and class participation, and 15 minutes of section review assessment questions. She utilizes the final five minutes for students to put away books and prepare for their next class. Her classroom management plan does not allow students much time to talk or interact with each other. Her transition from the bell ringer to the class lecture was very smooth and the students seem to be in routine with moving from one assignment to the next. I believe her daily schedule is a great method of classroom management because it helps her to keep the students on track. Interaction with Students Mrs. Pettway fully interacts with her students throughout the class period. She walks also the classroom and monitors the progress of each student and makes sure they are staying on task with their assignment. She gets students involved in the discussion questions by randomly calling on them to answer questions. When her students have questions or do not understand information about their assignment, she provides them feedback to get them back on the right track. Classroom Setup The classroom is set up with 27 students. The students’ desks are all facing the front of the classroom. Her class consisted of a whiteboard, smart board, and projector. Mrs. Pettway desk is also stationed at the front of the classroom where she is able to see each student. The students are seated in the classroom in alphabetical order facing the white board where the objectives and assignments and daily schedule were placed visible to the students. She also has two tables in the classroom that are seated away from the rest of the class for students with behavior issues. Classroom rules are placed on the wall near the entrance of the classroom visible for all students to see as they enter the classroom. Examples and Incidents of Mutual Respect Mrs. Pettway seems to be the person controlling the class at all times. She has built a personal rapport with students and they have a lot of respect for her. Mrs. Pettway greets the students by theirs name as they enter the class. When students want to get her attention they raise their hand, she acknowledges them and provides them with an appropriate answer. For example, when Mrs. Pettway was during her lecture, all students were attentive and listening. Her class exhibited no behaviors or distractions during class time. She also gives her students mutual respect by acknowledging and praising them for engaging in class discussion and completing the classroom before the end of class. Preventive Procedures and Activities At the beginning of class, Mrs. Pettway had already had her books turned to the chapter that she would be lecturing from. She also had the students’ assignments for the day listed on the board so they would know what the tasks were for the day. Her lesson was prepared before class and she was confident in the information she was teaching. The class activities were in line with the lecture and class discussion that was previously discussed and they were engaging and seemed to be interesting for the students. Discipline model used in the classroom and school The discipline model that was used in the classroom was to separate the students that had disruptive behavior from the rest of the class. She stated that she uses this model because it helps to cut down on the distractions and helps the rest of the class stay on track. Another discipline that she uses is parent teacher conferences for students with disruptive behavior. The schools discipline policy of disruptive behavior usually result in ISS in school suspension, detention, or suspension away from school. How does the teacher deal with a parent or guardian of a disruptive child? Mrs. Pettway stated that she holds parent or guardian conferences for her students often. If a student is being disruptive in the classroom, she makes contact with the parents or guardian for a conference to discuss the behavior. Mrs. Pettway stated that she deals with a parent or guardian of a disruptive child in a calm and professional manor. She discusses the student’s behaviors with the parents and possible solutions. She also stated that she works closely with the parents to set achieve goals for their child, monitor their behavior and holds follow up conferences with the parents to determine if the student’s behavior is improving. In conclusion, I learned how to effectively run a classroom management plan. The classroom observation was very informative and a great learning experience. I discovered different ways to deal with classroom behavior without affecting the learning of the other students in the classroom. I really enjoyed this classroom observation experience.

Effective leadership is infectious and should be spread to as many areas of the organization as possible; doing this will result in a highly-coordinated effort to please both customers and employees. CONTROLLING Controlling is the fourth function in the management process. Controlling means monitoring employees activities, determining whether the organization is on target towards its goal, and making correction as necessary. In year 2006, when the president of The Coffee Bean Tea Leaf found the company was facing its worst fiscal performance. He quickly identified one major, underlying issue that The Coffee Bean Tea Leaf various managers needed to boost their commitment and involvement with their stores and be accountable for performance. After attending the MAP workshop, The Coffee Bean Tea Leaf decided to bring in the expert consultant to introduce MAP to the entire management team. MAP coached The Coffee Bean Tea Leaf in setting up its Vital Factor Dashboard, which gave the managers a way to establish, monitor and measure individual and group goals. This created the foundation for a collaborative approach that instilled fresh ownership and accountability among the managers and crucial team-building skills. As a group, the managers celebrated achievements and identified opportunities to reach healthier levels of success. This newfound energy motivated and inspired the managers, who started taking greater ownership in store and company performance. Instead of taking a top-down management approach, they addressed responsibilities from the bottom-up which including customer interactions and communications, employee insights and feedback, and a hands-on. With the MAP system in place, The Coffee Bean Tea Leaf experienced a complete turnaround in its productivity and profitability. In terms of the workplace culture, the managers renewed ownership in their stores, plus their dedication to the welfare of their employees, customers and the company at large. Employees caught the spirit, which has since translated into better service and product. In three years time, sales have increased 30 percent, the cost of goods has dropped 3 percent, labor costs have shrunk 5 percent, and personnel turnover has decreased from 236 to 52 percent annually. As to bottom-line profits, The Coffee Bean Tea Leaf has experienced a 200 percent turnaround from 2006, positioning the company in a positive cash-flow situation, despite a weakened national economy. The improvements from MAPs structured system, as well as the coachs ability to create for the managers that important buy-in to the program, which impacted their ability to set and achieve key goals. From the interview with The Coffee Bean Tea Leaf, we found that they monitor their employees activities by their performance. The manager will try to solve their problem whenever she found that their performances have dropped. She will try to help them in order to raise their performance up. The manager also prepared duty schedule for the employees so that all employees have equality working hour. Manager stated that for the new employees, she will assigned them with the cleaning job first before they can proceed to become barista. Their working duty will change every week and depends on the situation and how fast the employees could master the task. For the cashier task, it is reserve for the staff that worked long period and has more experience. The companies differentiate the new staff and old staffs in order to prevent the problem happen. It is very easy for the new staff to make some mistake. This differentiation could be easier for the manager to monitor them. The main product of The Coffee Bean Tea Leaf is tea leaves. The company needs to make sure that those products are on target toward its goal. When the company found that those products do not on target, they need to make corrections in this area. The manager said, this could happen probably that they did not take out the dry bean that in the process when the time is ready for the dry bean to take out. When there is short of employees this could happen but they are tried to avoid this from happen. Quality of the bean is very important to them and they would take this seriously because this would affect their company sales target. The other problem could be the clean environment of the place. The manager will make sure that the surrounding area must be clean because clean environment could easily attract customer to dine in. A clean environment is also an effect that cause a company sales targets to drop. The manager make correction of this problem by assign that cleaning job must be done twice time in a day that is once in morning and once in night when the shop close. The day that we went for interview, we found that the shop air condition is not in well-being. The manager told us somehow this air conditioning would also affect the customer to dine in. The manager had called for the technician to fix the air conditioning as well. For the conclusion, there are many problems that could affect the target of the company and monitoring employees activities is not an easy job for the manager too. Career Path: Who am I? Essay -- Psychology

Finding a career that overlaps personal and professional concerns is the focus of most career counseling. O*net (2000) has created two assessment tools that help individuals navigate this difficult impasse. This paper focuses on my individual results, reactions and conclusions regarding these two assessments. Career Instrument Results Built around Holland’s Theory of Types and Person-Environment Interactions, the Interest Profiler (IP) and Work Locator (WL) instruments are self-administered, self-scored surveys designed to reveal an individual’s personality type and work values in order to match themselves with a career that will allow the appropriate expression of both. According to the results of these instruments I am categorized as Artistic-Achievement. My secondary interests are Social and Investigative. My secondary work value was revealed as both Relationships and Support. My current job zone is four and my future job zone is five. Niles & Bowlsbey (2009) gives an account of Holland’s personality types. According to this description, artistic types â€Å"prefer ambiguous, free, unsystematized activities†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (p. 64). They tend to gain knowledge in language, art, music, drama and writing and have less tendency toward clerical or business related topics. Some words associated with this type that I feel apply to me include: complicated, imaginative, disorderly, intuitive, nonconforming, expressive, idealistic and original. There are a few that I don’t think I adhere to: introspective, impractical, and impulsive. I will admit that this assessment could be due, at least in part, to a lack of personal insight. It’s interesting to note that my secondary interest areas are Social and Investigative; the two personality pat... ...demic pursuits and the many hats I wear as a mom give me room to express my creativity and build relationships that have great impact on the entire community. I look forward to the future and what God has in store for my life. I believe that He alone has called me to this profession. He alone created me to fulfill His purpose and bring about His kingdom. Essay --

The fictional short story by Kurt Vonnegut entitled Harrison Bergeron takes place in a dystopian future. Vonnegut chooses to make the story a satire in order to raise questions concerning how desirable social equality is within this world and how far society will go to achieve it. Like many dystopian, bleak, futuristic worlds, Vonnegut presents very clear aspects of how society is influenced by propaganda and the extent to how powerful a tool propaganda can be. After reading and analyzing this story, I will attempt to explain how Kurt Vonnegut’s life could have influenced his position on propaganda found within this short story. Furthermore, these elements will be matched to those common propaganda strategies discussed in this class and relate how this may impact any modern society. Vonnegut's experience as a soldier and prisoner of war had a defiant influence on his work. He served as a private and was captured during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. He was chosen as a leader of the POWs captured because he spoke a little German. After telling the German guards "what [he] was going to do to them when the Russians came,† he was beaten and had his position as leader taken away. Vonnegut was one of the lucky ones to survive an attack in a meat locker used by the Germans as a detention facility. Vonnegut said that the aftermath of the attack was "utter destruction" and "carnage unfathomable." This experience was the inspiration and central theme for many of his other books including Harrison Bergeron. The Germans put the surviving POWs to work, breaking into basements and bomb shelters to gather bodies for mass burial, while German civilians cursed and threw rocks at them. Harrison Bergeron is what seems to be a negative po... ...y to show just how absurd a life living with handicaps can be. The handicap system is a metaphor that tries to bash the ideas of communism that he undoubtedly incorporated from history using Hitler’s Germany and Cold War Russia as examples of how this system is flawed. The satire is further enforced by the elements of propaganda that he uses in the story. The television is the medium in which all people in society use to get their information. It is a powerful tool and Vonnegut has the entire story’s setting be only around the television to show just how much people rely on it. He also shows how propaganda has conditioned people to follow what the State wants them to do by appealing to the people’s logic that no one person should be than another. A good idea in principle, but in action, it causes a lot of harm and only benefits the State or the people in control. Limiting the Use of Technology

Over the past several years’ technology has advanced significantly. Nowadays most everything we use is done by some form of technology. Several years ago, we didn’t even have cellphones or the Internet, now we have cellphones that can access the Internet. This generation has become so dependent with technology that it is actually beginning to harm most us, not help us. So this leads us to believe one should limit his or her use of technology because it could cause addiction, loss of time management, and invaded privacy. Technologies, such as cellphones, Internet, and video games have lead many to be addicted.Because we use cellphones everyday we become dependent on them and use them constantly. Now, when one loses his or her cellphone one gets paranoid and feels as if there is no more hope or life because he or she is so addicted to it. Another sign of addiction would be driving while on the phone. There have been so many cases of people driving while texting or talking on their phone that have caused accidents and deaths. One may see this when a person is a businessman and is constantly on calls, he or she will not put ones phone down because that person is too addicted.Businessmen even bring their work home, they would be eating dinner and they would still take their calls. Obsession could also lead to contently buying items off the Internet or even buying money to play certain games such as, Farmville. Addiction can cause many problems for a person such as, obsession, and the loss of focus towards school and ones job. When a person becomes obsessed over technology such as video games, they soon consume ones life. People find video games exciting as well fun, but what they do not know is that when they continually play them, they can be easily addicted an obsessed with them. Many people waste their lives away just sitting in front of their television playing video games all day and night. Technology can also be a occurring distraction for many an d this can cause many problems. The Internet is one of the many forms of technology we use on a day-to-day basis, and it can be very helpful or very distracting. When we become distracted with the Internet we loose all other priorities that need to be done such as our schoolwork, job, or even children. This is one of the many reasons why we should limit ourselves to the use of technology. By limiting ourselves we are saving ourselves from becoming addicted and obsessed.Secondly, we may end up losing our discipline in time management and cause problems in our lives. When we do not watch how we make use with our time, we can lose track of what needs to be done. Time management is an important factor in our lives and when we lose sight on that we may end up forgetting important tasks. Video games are one of the many technologies we use most of our time doing and keep us from doing our work. Teenagers these days have gotten bad grades and failed classes because they spend too much time playing video games and not much time on their schoolwork. We also end up losing time we could be spending working on our career. Instead of building up our career we tend to waste that time on the Internet or video games. When technologies such as video games or the Internet take the place of schoolwork or our career, we lose all discipline in time management. People who do not have a good time management also will tend to lose friends; they distance themselves by constantly being on the computer or video game. No one wants a person as a friend if all he or she does is play video games and nothing else. When people are losing friends because they are always playing on the computer or video games, we know something must not be healthy. Time management is one of the biggest problems we face when technology is in our day-to-day focus and priority. We also tend to stay inside all day on the Internet or playing video games, and this consumes all the time we could be using for outdoor exer cise and fitness. People can become sick because they are not getting enough exercise through out the day; they become lazy and procrastinate.Staring at a screen is not healthy for your body mentally and physically; it affects your brain and your physical well-being. When our brain absorbs too much ultra violet rays it actually affects our imagination and thought process, and when we sit in front of a screen for a certain amount of time we can actually gain wait and become unhealthy. This is second reason as to why we should limit our use of technologies; they can easily become our number one priorities in life and can ruin a possible future or career. Lastly, since technology has advanced within the last couple of years it has become less private. The more time you put into updating statuses, uploading pictures, and talking to people on line, the more of your personal life will appear all over the world wide web. Every little thing we do online has become less and less safe and priv ate, when we spend so much time on the computer we could end up putting material up we never intended everyone in the world to see. When we spend too much time on sites such as Facebook we become more susceptible to invasion of our privacy, this is when situations can get dangerous.Since the advancement of technology people can hack into other people’s computers and steal passwords and private information we contain. There are so many bad guys out there that when we are so into whatever we are doing online we lose all common sense in safety and privacy. Once people put their information on the Internet there is no way of taking it off, so the criminals could easily find them. Another example would be the use of E-bay; so many people use this constantly and actually are losing money. There are a lot of people out there that will scam you and take your money such as sending fake checks and such.We need to be more careful when we do business over the Internet, it’s not sa fe. This is very dangerous, so how you spend and limit your time on such technologies is important for ones safety as well as another’s. Looking back about 10 years ago when they didn’t have video games, high speed Internet, or cellphones with good connection life was much safer and healthier. People were always outside and when they wanted to talk to someone they would go to them and would have an actual conversation face to face. Nowadays we stay connected with people over the Internet and build relationships online. We have become very lazy in our daily living. If we didn’t spend so much time using the Internet, phone, video game, or television, we wouldn’t have to deal with most of the problems that are occurring now, such as theft, tiredness, laziness, and obesity. Some of the causes of these problems would be addiction, loss of time management, and invasion of privacy. Technology, nowadays have become the main source of most of our crimes, problems, and accidents. By limiting our use of these technologies we limit the problems that will potentially occur.

Comparison Contrast of Death of a Salesman and Glengarry Ross

Sasha Schmidt Midterm Essay Question 4 Jeannine Rus carry on 10/28/12 The ad fair(a) Criminal Being a salesman has ever so carried a interdict stigma since the beforehand(predicate) 1900s. Being captivaten as pushy, high pressure, unavailing people the dreaded activity of purchase few car or upstart appliance has haunted e realone at some point or another. Many manner of speaking aro social occasion come to describe salesman such(prenominal) as sharks, cons, thieves etc. , and these words have stuck with the profession throughout the century. Two very realistic depictions of such phonies can be seen in Death of A Salesman by Arthur Miller and Glengarry Glen Ross by David Mamet. They depict the styles of 2 salesmen who have very similar interchange techniques, solely at the same prison term can be contrastingly different. Willy Loman, the jock of Death of a Salesman, is oft regarded as a tragic figure with whom the listening feels sympathetic. At the same time, his u navailing, dishonest, adulterous slipway atomic number 18 despised. In addition to this, his everywhere confident attitude seems supercilious and creates more of a disdain for the character as can be seen when he says Goddammit, I could sell them (Miller 1071). The same can be said as Mamets character, Shelly Levene, starts declaring how considerable of a seller he was.Basking in his own light he boldly exclaims that his success as a salesman is repayable not to his luck but his skill( Mamet 1419). Both characters a lot times conversation about how back in the daytimelight they were great assets of the company averaging a c and seventy dollars a week in commissions (p. 1089) and Cold calling. Nothing. Sixty-five, when we were on that point (Mamet 1419). Both characters hit their tragic ends as they realize that their deceitful and deceptive nature, the facade of great merchandising they recognized behind, is a shattered reality. All both(prenominal)(prenominal) of them want is a chance and to live like they did in the old years and both are denied the chance. While their characters mimic for each one other, the interchange techniques of these two are on the whole different. Willys approach is to go in making natural conversation and the client feel as if they are human. overmuch to his chagrin is the new reality he is facing, where its all cut and dried, and theres no chance for saving friendship to bear(Miller 1089). In contrast, Levene takes on the role of cut and dried sales techniques, often using his other associates as pretend clients in suppose to just puddle the sell, whether or not hes romping extorting money out of his clients. office from the beginning, he is trying to con leads out of Williamson, his supervisor. I need the leads, he boldly tells Williamson who reluctantly begins to make him a deal (Mamet 1418). Right from the get go, Leven is already using the usage techniques he uses day in and day out on his co-worker s even. Loman pushes his honest, integrity, and personality traits as the key to selling success, though we see an obvious decline in his selling abilities compared to the others. That being said, both characters are static very flawed with illusions of owning their own companies and wait for the right client to come along. They both still have some noisome personality traits and are still put on a facade to trick people however, Willy Loman is tricking his family while Shelly Levene is tricking his consumers. Hard selling is a selling technique in which the salesman manipulates the psychological state of the consumer in order to achieve a sale, whether or not the sale is good (Baron & Branscombe). There is elfin concern for the consumer at all, in fact, often times the seller knows that the consumer is going to be placed into a bad situation, but they specifically rely on the ego-depletion of these buyers. They use a variation of techniques such as door-in-the-face and foot-in-t he door just to name a few (Baron & Branscombe). Miller and Mamet depict this from the salesmans side. They place this psychologically demanding technique at fault of the company, who requires them to sell a conclusion amount or face endpoint from the job. Such fear could incite high pressure selling techniques, which actually make the consumer and the seller feel uncomfortable.Mamet and Miller pink such deceptive techniques through their plays, spotlight the negative effects (the destruction of the of import unit) and exacerbating the flaws of the technique. The role of a salesman has been get down of America since the very beginning. With its recent whirling in the 1900s, it has now been associated with a negative stereotype often depicted by movies, literature, and plays. While there might be individual differences in the selling techniques, sellers are all perceived the same dishonest, deceitful, and as con artists.Such a stigma created by their lack of concern after the sell has been made often reconfirms this stereotype. These prejudices notwithstanding, society often places a high demand on consumerism to help the economy and pushing the achievement of the American dream. Miller and Mamet uncover the treacheries of the salesman intentness leaving the question as to whom the neat criminal is society or the salesman. kit and boodle Cited Jacobus, Lee A. A critical assessment of 2 pieces of drama around the theme of ‘Space’ Essay

In this attempt I ordain be writing almost how I performed to humans of improvised bid based slightly the atomic number 18na of place. One of the composings had to be do in a rea appointic style and the opposite an view.initial Reaction to StimulusWhen we were scratch told that are stimulus would be topographic evidence, we each sit down I and had what could be called a superstar storming session. This was to consider how such a broad subject could be perceived in deuce pieces of turn. foremost of all we had to consider how quad could be identified. in that respect are m each kinds of berth, which can be made into forms of caper, and we would need to select bingle that could erect the most gripping. For this we identified just how put could be functiond, and came up with the liveing predilections for realistic or scheme piece (we could the ideas into abstract drama later)Space, as in the last(a) frontier, could be use to abundant effect. Space and the entire nonion of the great beyond could be used. Maybe having shells interacting with mention non of this planet, by chance contrasting views or morals. Maybe having the bug come out of the clo installsider flood tide to earth from dummy. Using quadriceps femoris in this g everywherenment agency of life opens the door to all sorts of personification of space victimisation a science fiction spin. This could be through in slightly sort of Star journey, eyeshot provoking motion picture involving space.Personal space, or the deprivation of it. For a realistic piece, maybe something to do with the prison system or freedom infringements. If we machinate it in a cell (an area where on that point is little space), not only would there be a direct physical relation to space al peerless in any case the removeices lead be qualified to march space in there public lecture and movements.Taking this idea further, we could establish how the lack of space mentally. Instead of the characters talking about space directly, it could be implied indirectly by their psychological flaws. These psychological flaws would yield been caused by space, either too much of it or not enough. These are all ideas in their early on periods and all need developing. But even at the early stage, the idea of psychological flaws caused by space was actually appealing. For the abstract piece of drama, these initial ideas pull up stakes contain to be developed in an alto consumeher different way. It go away need otherwise striking techniques to fit the criteriaA phantasmagoric piece would impart us to incorporate much style and personalization in to piece. When opineing about abstract and surrealism in drama, the jump thing that comes into my head is to have bit of drama instead of a continuous bosh. This would allow us to attest the subject matter, space, in a phone number of different ship canal.Freeze-frames could be used while each character con t hrough with(p)s information about them and their situation (character monologues). This would come out to the hearing character depth that could not be limitn in just a one hornswoggle scene. As for the content of this abstract piece, I had some ideas of separate pieces revolving hale-nigh the subject space. This would allow us to charge a lot of imagination in each piece without needing to worry about what would follow it.GroupsFor the offset printing piece I soured with the following potAlain BransonStuart MulranyChris JonesHussian KerianFor the second piece, we decided to split up and work with different. The principal(prenominal) reason for this was to keep all the drama fresh with fresh ideas. Although we thought that we were capable of producing other piece drama, tensions were building in the sort and we hold to spilt. For the second piece I worked withAlain BransonPlotThe start-off piece we worked on had a plot that I specify was well structured. It allowed cha racter depth and development. The introductory cardinal lessons after we formed are free radical were spent on structuring a plot which could register off are acting talents and incorporate the idea of space. First we decided that it should be based around a main character. An idea that has always kindle me was personifying a character sub sensible. This might sound a little far fetched only if it would give the character to a greater extent than substance and the audience something to relate to. This would not be his conscious or a replete(p) or bad angel solely a version of himself that is not usually seen. With that starting point we went ahead and considered how the space theme would fit into this idea. We thought a family clash about space would put this character in the right frame to execute good drama around him. This could be mirror with a character that is in a way opposite him.We all thought that it would be a good idea to have a optical conscious for him akin wit h the other character. This would allows us to dis electric razors play the differences in these characters and it would fit in with the number of slew in are congregation. How these conscious would look tangiblely on stage would be greatly influenced by Stuart, who put in a lot to the actual conscious theme.Taking all this we constructed a figment which we split up into scenes. This is the first draft of the scenes and what they would withstandScene 1 This scene would contain an agate line surrounded by the main character and his tonic. It has to be his dadaism because I do not believe any of us could pull of a convincing cleaning lady. This parameter would be about space, and the childs lack of it. This forget stop in the character storming out to see his friend. This will intend the trouble space has already caused. This will be set in the house.Scene 2 This would be an interlude where the audience gets some in sight into the relationship surrounded by him and his conscience. It will be the main character sound off to himself with the conscience talking around him. This will show how the character relates to something, which in essence, him cannot see or hear. This will be set in the walk among his house and the viridity.Scene 3 This will be conversation between the main character and what appears to be his opposite. This conversation will uncover some subscribe round information about each character and will explain their personality faults. It will withal set up the events for the next scene that involves unlawful activity brought on by conversation. This will show the parallels between devilcharacters who see and treat space in different ways and how it has effected them. This will be set in a unruffled place, a parkScene 4 In this scene the two main characters will get involved in major(ip) arson. This will run in an explosion off stage and the two running off. This shows what space problems can result in. This will be set in th e other end of the park.Scene 5 This will be worry the first scene, with an product line between the Dad and the main character. This will be a lot fiercer than the first and will increase in tension as it progresses. This is the finale of the drama and will bring out all the aspects of space we have been trying to portray. This will be set back in the house. In term of evaluating the plot, I am proud of it. I play a enlarged part in crafting it and personally I feel happy with it. Problems with it may be finding enough for the consciences to conjecture and do since they are simply other version of the characters that already present.CastingWe form casting really difficult, particularly a part for Hussian. First of all, we thought it would be best if he had the role of the Dad. But we found a stern sort of character wasnt suited for him. We then had the idea of changing the Dad to a Mum. But Hussian playing a woman in my opinion, and on previous acting experience, seems to be type cast and contrary to some stack opinion he was cast in a role that would highlight his acting talent. The other characters were comparatively easy to cast. Here was the final cast listLeigh Turner The DadAlain Branson Gary (the main character)Stuart Mulrany Gary conscienceChris Jones Damien (the character opposite to Gary)Hussian Kerian Damien conscienceSetAbove is the set we choose to use. I played the Dad, so I wore clothes that delineate a Dad. I just wore a black tee shirt and jeans, which is what my Dad would wear. Gary wore typical teenage cl othes, a grab scurfy to help show the difference between him and Damien. Damien will also were typical teenage clothes, but nothing akin Garys. The consciences wore suits. This would show how they different from the other characters and yet s bowl an important part of the drama. We would also be able to visual show aspects of there personality. This means Garys conscious is good, so he wore a white suit and Damiens conscious a black suit.RehearsalsRehearsal started well with Alain and myself press release though the first financial statement many times. The first argument we thought needed to build in aggression as it went on. We found this hard at the beginning because we found that we got very angry very quickly and needed to take it slower. This was a dinky problem and was easily overcome. aft(prenominal) we had the basic of this scene, we locomote on to the bench scene. This scene was hard to rehearse, and legitimate members of the cast did not help. Small arguments in the group made rehearsing slow and grinding. Out of all scenes, this one was the one that never genuinely was rehearsed to maximum affect. Chris and Stuart, to major parts in this scene, had moments of inspiration that helped give a completeer picture of are story.About one-half way though the recital time the group came to a discussion that the story needed a more conclusive ending. We needed to change the story and keep the scenes the same so it would not violate rehearsals too much. We decided that in scene 4 that Gary would die in the explosion and the final argument would be between Damien and the Dad about the blame. This would show the consequences of space and add to the drama. The explosion would be a red strobe light operated of stage and Damien and Gary would be blown on stage, with only Damien getting up and running any. This means we would have to put in new spin on the final argument so Damien would fit into the ending. We decided that if Damien were to come to see th e Dad so it would be Damien trying to explain himself. This would allow Chris to show of his talent (which may not get shown in previous scenes) and allow me to say something different to a different person. The more rehearsal went on, the more we touched up the scene. Stuarts theatrical role to the way consciences move and talk was a big help. Hussian, Alain and Chriss determination helped finish the scenes kept it all going. Still, I dont think we really got the park scene nailed.Piece 2After we changed groups, the first thing we did was to decide how to make this piece abstract and surreal. Most of these ideas were covered in the Initial Reaction to the Stimulus. surface-to-air missile and Alain played a major part in deciding how the play would actually work. We wanted to consider all the ways we could show space in a surreal way so this took quite a chip shot of time.Instead of just repeating what I verbalise at the beginning the essay, basically we decided to have pieces of drama (with monologues and freeze frames) cogitate by a tableaux. Admittedly, I would have care to try something a bit more, well adventuresome but this seemed to fit the bill and with the right motion picture would create gripping drama. The pieces of drama would involve to 2 conflicting character. The third person in the group would give a monologue while the others are in a freeze frame. After this the characters would sacrifice to a platform at the back of the stage and do a tableau reflecting what has just happened. in that location were4 pieces if drama and to save confusion, we named the characters with one name, no matter what scene there in.Alain Branson Tony (Gangster, Brother, Teacher)Sam Jordan enkindle (Gangster, Dad, Pupil)Leigh Turner goof (Barman, Brother, Son)Scene 1 Jack is arguing with his Dad ( hassle) about space. Jack is child that has had his own way most of his and it is only belatedly that his Dad had not been allowing him to go out. This sparked the argument. His dad is not over protective, but wants the best for his son. Jack is a typical adolescent that is over emotional and arrogant.Sam played the Dad with depth and sternness, just like a real Dad and dominated the scene. I think I played the teenager well, computer memory my constant arguing with my folks. The problems with playing a teenager is that in and argument they have limited language and generally say the same thing over and over. Anyway, I think this was a strong scene that set the standard for the rest of the play.Scene 2 Harry (a schoolboy) is arguing with his teacher (Mr. Tony) about a detention. Harry has been having a few family problems at base of operations and this has crossed over into his schoolwork. This has lead to Mr. Tony having to give him a detention. The argument consisted of Harry trying to explain the situation to the teacher.Sam once once more pulled of a very good portrayal of character, but due to the constitution of the role was not the dominant character. Alain played an sharp teacher character, really showing talent a presence on stage. Once again, teachers are indomitable so not repeating yourself would have been hard, but Alain was very believable.Scene 3 Tony starts an argument with this brother, Jack. This is over how Jack gets more space and time off of their dad. This is the first time they have had an argument like this one and Tony is unsure how his brother will fight down. This leads to an argument, which incomplete of them gain the upper hand until the end, where Jack hits Tony.Alain was very convincing as the somewhat confused Tony, adjusting to the modulate of the argument accordingly. I was not so good. I had trouble adapting to the level of aggression I should use in the argument.Scene 4 Two tinct gangster have an argument over, wait for it, space and end up shooting each other. The two have a violent history and this is the final straw. The initial meeting takes place in a bar where Tony is enjoy a drink with barman. Harry walks in and the argument between the two at last leads then to a shot out. Once again Sam and Gary where very convincing drawing on there past experience of gangster roles. I really took a minor part in this scene, letting the gangster create the drama. I did show a friendship with Tony, but this was minuscule lived and explored. This I think was the weakest of the 4 scene and was performed for the wrong reasons (i.e. they were both(prenominal) involved in gangster related drama during the writing stage).SetAs you can see, we used a very Brecht set, with very few props to speak of. This minimalist stage meant we had more space for acting and movement. Brecht played a part in designing the stage because we all felt that a executing like this one needed a strong style so it separates it from other abstract pieces. Special lighting was not needed, so full house lights were used.CostumesWe all decided to wear suits in all the pieces. This would make it more abstract and they a very versatile to the parts we played (teacher, gangster etc.)RehearsalsWe had many rehearsals, which we managed to fit into a very short time space. We went through every scene in order constantly with very little variation.I would like to put a lot more detail into this but there was little else we did. We looked at the tableaux and changed them a few times till they represented each scene perfectly. The monologues were rehearsals a lot till everybody knew what everybody what going to say.Evaluation (of both)Both the performances went very well and very few mistakes. In comparison the two piece are different but with one on going theme. This is that they all show a single characters problem with space. This allowed us to show how different people can react to space. This, however, lead to some of are character seem the same.I terms of actual work, I think the last group I worked was dedicated than the first and wanted to get the work done more. As is sa id earlier, some scenes in the first performance I would have liked to go over a few more times. This I think can be related to the size of groups. judge you can get more work done if there is a smaller number in your group. You can concentrate more and work more in a complete group. In terms of plot, I think are first piece was better. This is not that the second piece had no plot, but I think the first performance was more gripping and kept attention better.
